Advanced Groups Interface (More user-friendly, customizable)

groups

(Harish Vangala) #1

“Groups” is indispensable for a single large bibliography file. One simply cannot live without it, like folders to “nautilus” or “windows-explorer”. Interestingly JabRef’s “Groups” is much more advanced in terms of allowing Static/Dynamic/Free-form-search based grouping, but its interface is terrible and very primitive. For example, consider the following issues.

  1. Frequent layout disturbance:
    i. If I create a new group, every other group expands and annoys.
ii. Any editing operation disturbs the carefully formatted layout.
  2. No searching with folders
  3. Deleting, moving, renaming is horribly complicated. It is unclear how it affects the elements within. Even if known, it either requires too many steps with mouse or it looks risky on existing entries composition.

  • I would like to have this feature, too!
  • I don’t care.

Hi Harish,

a rework of the groups interface is currently underway as part of a larger overhaul of the interface and an update of the UI technology. See https://github.com/JabRef/jabref/pull/2290

You can download an executable with the current state here: http://builds.jabref.org/javafx/ You are welcome to try it out and to provide feedback!

Regards
Jörg

With the release of 4.0 beta most of the above issues are now resolved.
