I propose a new field, which would contain the number of citations for an entry. It would help to get an insight how important and impactful the given paper is. The information is available at indexing sites. Google Scholar has one, but IEEEXplore also provides this data.
I imagine it as simple data field in jabref and in the .bib file, and another script could collect this information for the database and update the values in it.
The linked discussion is about the journal information. It is a nice feature, but I do not see its importance, since I know well enough the relevant journals in my field. In another fields it might be way more diverse.
I imagined an option to sort papers in my database based on their citations. It would help me find the well established works easier.
I think it could be a parameter for the entry which could be updated by a command, i.e. I think a live update is not needed.
I just spent over an hour looking into how to do this… I always guide my students to include this in their literature reviews, and I was sure it would be possible to do somehow.
I also agree adding publication impact factor could be nice (or even author’s impact factor) but as said here before, one would would usually know their field well enough to not really need these.
