Me too. I tried to move my kernel up from 6.9.3 to 6.10.1 to see if that gets the OS a bit closer to “current” . . . which a number of my other linux systems are running 6.12 . . . .
But, the “dependency” error has been consistently the same for the three tries on getting it updated. I don’t really get “under the hood” too much in the command line of apps, but I do understand how certain packages require certain other packages to work, without them, nada.
Not holding my breath, no major projects riding on this right now, just, it’s a problem that makes it more time consuming to do this basic database maintenance work.
So, it seems like the 3rd or 4th time is not the charm. GDebi did pass the package as approved for installation, and installed it. It said something like, “This is the same version that was installed.”
I did a few citations, in three cases, the first group added by right click does work, but progressively, the more groups added there was a hiccup . . . first time the third group took multiple right clicks, but then it did on 4th click, add it to group AND a notification window opened saying, “item has been added to group,” which is new.
But in the 2nd citation the problem again showed up on the second group I tried to add it to, not adding it at all, then moving on to another group for multiple clicks, and it finally working, with the pop up notification again.
And third citation again first group added, but second not, and third I dragged it over.
So, tomorrow is “research day” . . . I’ll try Jabref from cold boot and see if anything changes . . . but as of now does not seem to have fully resolved the right-click group add issue. It was the same as in the video where in the drop down menu the “add item to group” does not highlight, and fails to add it . . . .
Please select a group or multiple groups first, then select the entries and do a right click on one of the selected entries in the table . There’s a new option
See my screenshot.
Hmm . . . not sure how that, “select group(s) first, then select entries” is supposed to work?
So, I did get to add a few citations today, and I could tentatively say, “It is better,” as in it was more consistent to add to group via right-click. One time it did not work.
But, if I click on a group, the right side loads the citations already IN the group, right? So then how would I be able to find the new citation to add it in?? I tried out a few ways to do it, but failed to approximate what you did in the screenshot . . . .
So, it might be that there is improvement, but 2 steps forward, 2 steps back, now when I tried to right-click to paste a PMID number into the search box . . . could not do that, “paste” was not showing as a highlighted option. Had to cttrl +V to do that.
I added custom tabs to the entry editor and included the groups field in several of the custom tabs. This way, the field remains readily accessible, letting me add groups to the entry (instead of adding the entry to groups).
Typing the group names might seem inefficient, but there are ways to accelerate text input, and this also means you can add groups that don’t yet exist. Obviously, this approach works best for jobs involving individual entries, such as screening.
Ideas for efficiency:
Keep the most wanted group name in your clipboard, then type additional group names as needed.
Use shorthand for the group names, then find and replace with full names. Note: Remember to limit the find-and-replace operation to selected entries and the groups field.
Consider text expansion. Espanso is working for me on Wayland.
Hmm . . . thanks kindly for the follow up on it, but so far this aging male is not finding the way to do the various suggestions about “filtering group mode via toggle” . . . or even adding groups to entry . . . tried right-clicking on the entry and in there is “add to group” but still trying to get group highlighted while keeping a visual on the new entry . . . not happening.
Anyway, I just added three or four new entries, usually get the bulk of my Pubmed digest emails on the first weekend of the month, so today not as many to go through and/or add.
In my case there aren’t per se one major group that is repeatedly used . . . my “workflow” is trained to add entry to group . . . and today adding a few entries to a few groups via right-clicking went “OK,” . . . only one time did the drop down menu on the group not highlight the “add entry to group” and clicking elsewhere to clear that menu, and repeating the right-click, then did add the entry.
So, likely I will endeavor to persevere with my method, albeit perhaps “inflexible,” somewhere perhaps between changes made on dev side, and possibly moving the kernel up to a newer option, it has seemingly improved. I will continue to monitor it, the bigger “test” will be week one of February.
The way you are doing it is perfectly fine, and probably the best way to add multiple entries at once to the same group.
What I meant about “adding groups to entries” was simply to type the group name/names into the “Groups” field (located in the “General” tab, by default). You can type whatever you want in this field, including group names that don’t exist yet in the “Groups” panel, such as aging in the screenshot.
To add multiple groups to the entry – or in other words, assign the entry to multiple groups – just type the group names, separated by the delimiter used by your library such as aging, male
Toggle the button off to show within-group entries at the top followed by additional entries (that are not in the group). The row highlighting is disorienting, but you can still tell that the entries are divided because the entries are sorted by Citatationkey, and the sorting “starts over” where the additional entries begin.
I agree that maintaining orientation and keeping specific entries in view in JabRef is often a struggle (see other post by me in this forum). One thing EndNote does that I like is keep entries selected when the user “opens” another group containing the same entries.
Here is an example of how you can use temporary shorthand “codes” for quick data entry.
Obviously, this has nothing to do with highlighting entries, but it is an unambiguous means of adding entries to multiple groups. Pardon me if this is too far off topic.
Wow, OK, thanks very kindly for the thorough wiki with visual aids . . . . Also, very creative linking the narrative to the theme of “aging male.” In some ways that condition is better than the “young male” condition, but in other ways . . . not.
I was clicking on as many icons as I could to try to figure it out, (pressed for time, no time to actually read the user manual), but I didn’t try clicking on the “general” tab . . . .
Anyway, very kind of you to provide that boost . . . I’ll have to go through it a few times to get the hang of it . . . the old dog still can learn a few things. Perhaps this “aging male” search term might become an avenue of research pursuit for you?? I might have to add it into my database as well . . . .
Still hoping that in one of the iterations the right-click “add to groups” feature will be returned . . . as it was in earlier editions . . . .
So, I am marking this thread as solved . . . as the problem has improved such that it is happening less . . . . Not sure where the fix came into play, but Christoph’s “I found the problem and changed something” might have been it, OR my upgrading the kernel in Pop_OS to 6.10 . . . also seemed to play some part in better function.
There are still problems with the drop down menu not going away, and/or copy/paste from right click not working in the search bar, but I can work around them. And, the best part is that I could continue to use my right-click on the sub-group to add to sub-group method.
Trying the other suggestions was increasing the difficulty for this “aging man,” so that aging person is happy to have basic right-click function working, and new addition, a pop-up from the bottom of the app saying what had just been done, e.g., “one item added to xxxx” . . . to confirm that it has been done. That is in fact helpful. Thanks for the attention here, I know where to find optional ways of adding citations to groups, if needed.
